Negril Overview

Negril, often called the “Capital of Casual,” is the crown jewel of Jamaica’s western coastline. With its stunning Seven Mile Beach, unforgettable sunsets, and laid-back vibe, this place has come a long way from its hippie days in the ’70s to become one of Jamaica’s top tourist spots.

Sure, you could spend all your time lounging on the beach and no one would blame you, but there’s also plenty to do. From enjoying the lively atmosphere at Rick’s Cafe to vibing with the locals, Negril has something for everyone.

Despite its popularity, Negril remains a small resort town that feels like a home away from home. It’s inviting and relaxing, with a romantic ambiance that makes it a perfect choice for newlyweds. Whether you’re looking to unwind or celebrate a special occasion, Negril offers a unique blend of comfort and charm.

Now, let’s dive into the highlights that make Negril such a must-visit destination.

Highlights of Negril

Negril is the place to go if you’re craving a mix of relaxation and fun. Here’s why you’ll love it:

  • Beach Paradise: Enjoy 7 miles of soft, white sand where you can kick back, soak up the sun, and let all your worries drift away. There’s no rush here, you’re on island time.
  • Charming Stays: Enjoy cozy, family-run hotels and guesthouses that line the beach. While a few larger hotels are around, Negril retains the hippie-era charm with its intimate, personal touches. Whether you’re on the sand or up on the cliffs, you’ll experience a warm, inviting atmosphere that’s uniquely Negril.
  • Something for Everyone: Negril is buzzing with things to do. From beach parties and live music to exploring nearby natural attractions, you’ll find plenty to keep you entertained. And if you’re up for it, day trips can add a little extra adventure to your stay.
  • Fresh Seafood Galore: Being right by the ocean means the seafood is incredibly fresh. Enjoy delicious local dishes at beachside restaurants or casual food stalls. If you’re a foodie, your taste buds will thank you.
  • Local Vibe: Negril’s small-town feel means you’re right in the mix with the locals. Dine where they eat, drink at their favorite bars, and strike up conversations with them wherever you go. This laid-back interaction lets you fully embrace and enjoy the island’s relaxed, easygoing culture.

If you’re looking to unwind, enjoy stunning beaches, and dive into the local scene, Negril is definitely the place to be.

THE GOOD

The 7 Mile Beach: Negril is home to the expansive Seven Mile Beach which is famous for its beautiful white sand and shallow waters. If you’re looking for the proverbial sand, sun and sea vacation, then Negril’s beaches are the best you can get.

Restaurants: Some of Jamaica’s best food spots can be found in Negril. The town has a very dense concentration of restaurants and most of them are good. Negril’s eats range from local cuisine to Chinese, Italian and Middle Eastern.

Rick’s Café: Rick’s café is one of many restaurants in Negril, but few people go for the food. The café is perched on the edge of a cliff overlooking the sea and has the most amazing views. It’s undoubtedly the best place in Jamaica to watch the sun set. In addition, the location offers cliff jumping for the not so faint at heart! While it does get crowded, visitors have the option to rent private cabanas where they get a designated server from the restaurant/bar.

The Cays: Negril is surrounded by several tiny cays that make for an adventurous boat tour. The most common and visitor friendly is Booby Cay, located off the coast of the Seven Mile Beach. The cay is surrounded by beautiful coral reefs that make the area perfect for snorkeling.

THE BAD

Beggars: Beggars are a big problem in Negril and they seem to be everywhere from outside of the resorts to some of the local beaches. While adults are usually the culprits, many of them have trained their children to be ‘hustlers’.

Distance: Negril is a bit of a distance away from the closest airport in Montego Bay. If you don’t mind the additional bus/car journey then the drive is worth it, but if you’d prefer to be near the airport then this destination might not be for you. The drive from the airport will take you at least an hour and 45 minutes.
